We deliver certainty through quality railway construction and reliable maintenance, executed safely and consistently.
Introduction and engineering expertise
Rail infrastructure maintenanceRail infrastructure is a critical enabler of economic growth, facilitating the efficient movement of freight, commodities, and people across industrial, mining, manufacturing, port, and logistics sectors. SAFLog provides comprehensive rail construction and maintenance solutions designed to develop, rehabilitate, and sustain safe, reliable, and high-performing railway infrastructure assets throughout their lifecycle.
Our specialist services encompass rail infrastructure consultancy, network planning and development, asset management, project management, track construction, earthworks, turnout installations, track renewals, rail welding, level crossing construction, rehabilitation projects, and ongoing maintenance programmes. Through strategic maintenance planning and engineering expertise, we assist clients in maximising asset life, improving operational reliability, and ensuring compliance with applicable railway standards and safety requirements.
SAFLog combines experienced engineering professionals, skilled permanent way teams, specialised plant and equipment, and proven project management capability to successfully execute complex rail infrastructure projects across South Africa. Our approach focuses on delivering safe, cost-effective, and sustainable infrastructure solutions that support long-term operational performance while minimising disruptions to client operations.
Our portfolio includes the successful construction of approximately 6 km of railway infrastructure at the Gibela Rail Manufacturing Facility in Dunnottar, rehabilitation of the Markman Siding rail network in Gqeberha, and the PPC Cement Siding Extension Project in Port Elizabeth. In addition, SAFLog currently maintains and supports extensive rail infrastructure networks for leading industrial, mining, petrochemical, and manufacturing clients across Southern Africa.

At SAFLog Railway Maintenance & Construction, safety is not merely a requirement; it is the foundation upon which our business has been built for more than 25 years. Every railway maintenance, construction, rehabilitation, and operational project is executed with an uncompromising commitment to protecting people, assets, the environment, and the continuity of our clients' operations.
Our safety culture extends beyond compliance. It is embedded in the mindset, behaviour, and daily activities of every employee, making safety a way of life throughout the organisation. This enables SAFLog to seamlessly integrate with our clients' safety management systems while consistently achieving the highest standards of operational excellence across the industries we serve, including Petroleum, Cement, Public Infrastructure, Mining, Aggregates, Ports, and Chemical Operations.
SAFLog operates within some of the most technically demanding and high-risk environments in Southern Africa, where railway infrastructure interfaces with hazardous materials, heavy industry, bulk commodity handling, and critical logistics supply chains. Our teams are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experience required to identify, assess, and mitigate risk before work commences, ensuring that every activity is conducted in a controlled and safe manner.
As a responsible rail service provider, SAFLog maintains strict compliance with all applicable legislation, railway operating standards, client requirements, and the regulatory framework of the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR). Our safety management systems are designed to support regulatory compliance through effective risk management, competency assurance, operational controls, incident prevention, and continuous performance monitoring.
A key pillar of SAFLog's success is our commitment to the continuous development of our people. We invest significantly in training, competency development, refresher programmes, and industry-specific certifications to ensure our workforce remains current with evolving legislation, RSR requirements, national standards, client expectations, and industry best practices. Through ongoing professional development, safety leadership initiatives, and regular competency assessments, we ensure that our employees are equipped to perform safely and effectively in changing operational environments.
Our personnel are fully aware of the risks associated with live railway operations and are trained to work with discipline, coordination, and situational awareness. Through controlled access procedures, permit-to-work systems, task-specific risk assessments, toolbox talks, safety observations, effective communication protocols, and strict adherence to railway operating rules, SAFLog consistently delivers work safely within active rail corridors, industrial sidings, terminals, loading facilities, ports, and operational rail networks.
Whether supporting petroleum terminals handling hazardous products, mining operations transporting bulk commodities, cement and aggregate facilities, chemical processing plants, public rail infrastructure, or major port logistics environments, SAFLog applies the same unwavering safety-first philosophy. This commitment enables us to minimise operational risk, protect our clients' assets and reputation, maintain regulatory compliance, and deliver reliable railway solutions without compromising safety, quality, or productivity.
Our success is measured not only by the infrastructure we build and maintain, but by our ability to deliver every project safely, responsibly, and in full compliance with applicable legislation and industry standards. SAFLog remains committed to ensuring that every employee, contractor, client representative, and stakeholder returns home safely at the end of every day.

Industry context
SAFLog has partnered with AfriSam for nearly two decades, building a long-standing relationship focused on practical, sustainable and mutually beneficial logistics solutions. SAFLog currently supports AfriSam operations at three sites: Brakpan, Roodepoort and Dudfield.
Construction operating contextBrakpan operations are divided into two main areas: packing and rail operations.
Packing operations involve packing cement products into 25 kg and 50 kg bags, followed by palletising for customer distribution.
Rail operations focus on handling and offloading milled products into the main silo. These products are then blended and mixed into different AfriSam product lines. SAFLog supports this process through locomotive shunting during offloading, carried out by a competent and trained team.
Roodepoort operations primarily involve shunting bulk product to the tippler area for offloading. This work is mainly performed using one of SAFLog’s smaller locomotives, commonly referred to as funkies, and is carried out by trained personnel.
Dudfield operations are structured around three main activities: packing, clinker loading and shunting.
Packing operations involve packing cement products into 50 kg bags and palletising them for customer distribution.
Clinker operations involve loading bulk product into rail wagons using specialised equipment.
Shunting operations support the movement of loaded wagons to the exchange yard for onward dispatch to various destinations. Mainline locomotives are also used to bring empty wagons from the exchange yard for loading and to dispatch loaded wagons back to the exchange.
